Georgia-Pacific Huntsville, AL
Safety Innovation Summary:
To eliminate the risk of falls associated with climbing a straight ladder to access the starch silo, the facility team installed a bridged walkway from the roof to the top of the silo. This solution aligns with the hierarchy of controls and Georgia-Pacific’s Path to Zero strategy, removing the hazard entirely rather than relying on PPE or procedural controls.
Implementation and Impact:
Working with a licensed contractor, the team fabricated a structurally sound bridge with railings and anti-slip treads. Roof access is also provided via a staircase with handrails, creating a fully protected path. Employees no longer need to use harnesses or climb ladders, and the risk of falling during silo access has been effectively eliminated.
