Smurfit Westrock Chattanooga Merchandising Displays Plant
Safety Innovation Summary:
To address one of the most significant risks in the facility, interactions between powered industrial trucks (PITs) and pedestrians, the Chattanooga Merchandising Displays plant launched a multi-layered initiative following a serious leg injury two years ago. A dedicated team, known as PALS (Pedestrian and Lift Truck Safety), was formed to identify high-risk areas and implement controls such as physical barriers, designated walkways and crossings, no-pedestrian zones, and manually activated warning lights in the warehouse and roll storage areas. These lights require PITs to halt movement when activated by pedestrians.
Implementation and Impact:
Efforts began in the Kit Packing area with the creation of Safe Zones, where PITs could not enter unless all pedestrians were in designated areas. The site then rolled out railing systems department by department, incorporating employee feedback to ensure usability and acceptance. The improvements have significantly reduced the risk of PIT-pedestrian incidents, while also increasing employee awareness, ownership, and satisfaction through active involvement in the safety process.
