Safety Innovation Summary:
The Denton sheetfeeder plant identified a significant motorized equipment and pedestrian (MOPED) interaction risk in the front parking lot, where employees and visitors were required to cross active shipping lanes to enter the facility. To address this hazard, the team installed an automated pedestrian crossing system with gates, crossing arms, and signal lights. The system is designed to keep pedestrian pathways open by default and automatically restrict access when trucks enter the area, allowing safe and controlled movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Implementation and Impact:
The project required extensive coordination, including concrete and electrical work, while maintaining safe operations during installation. After initial implementation, the team optimized the system by reversing the gate logic to improve traffic flow and usability. This engineered solution significantly reduced MOPED interaction risks outside the facility and extended the plant’s safety standards beyond its interior. The result is a safer, more controlled environment for employees, visitors, and contractors from the moment they arrive onsite.
