Safety Innovation Summary:
Following a significant near miss, North Star Sheets implemented a proximity detection system on clamp trucks to reduce struck-by risks involving pedestrians and equipment. The system uses cameras and sensors to detect objects or individuals in the truck’s path and provides real-time visual and audible alerts to the operator. This technology enhances awareness of blind spots and reinforces safe operating practices in high-traffic areas. 

Implementation and Impact:
The team evaluated multiple systems and selected the Luis safety system based on performance and usability. After a six-month trial, the system was optimized by refining camera configuration and reducing false alarms through calibration and vendor collaboration. Since implementation, operators have increased visibility and situational awareness, leading to improved pedestrian safety and greater confidence around powered industrial trucks. This proactive, technology-driven approach strengthens overall traffic safety and reduces the risk of struck-by incidents.
